West Marine hands out conservation grants

West Marine is awarding $35,000 in grants to non-profit organizations in six states that are working to improve and protect marine habitats.

The announcement, made in honor of World Oceans Day, listed recipients in California, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Virginia.

The company said the 10 grants focus on projects that enhance fish populations, including engaging anglers in data collection and tagging, enhancing marine habitat, educating anglers and encouraging policies that maintain healthy fish stocks.

“West Marine is proud to support recreational fishing, scientific and marine environmental groups who are working together for abundant and healthy habitats and fish stocks,” West Marine founder and chairman Randy Repass said in a statement. “The work of these organizations will benefit recreational fishing, sustainable commercial fishing and help to enhance fish populations for today’s anglers and future generations.”
