Mercury Marine plans August debut of new engine

Mercury Marine announced that it started production this week on a second-generation 8.2L engine.

The engine — an improved version of the 8.2L that MerCruiser released in early 2010 — was redesigned to enhance user experience on several fronts, according to Mercury. The engine is scheduled to reach dealerships and be available for consumer purchase by mid-August.

It starts with the second-generation 8.2L engine block that is MerCruiser-crafted to be available in sterndrive and inboard configurations. Factory application of options such as Digital Throttle and Shift, SeaCore and Axius will be available in the second-generation engine.

The second-generation engine has several improvements. Improved technologies in the 8.2L result in an engine that is quieter at cruising speed, easier to maintain and easier to install. Relocated fluid reservoirs are more visible and more accessible than in the predecessor, making topping off fluids simpler.

An improved exhaust, an induction air silencer and improved installation equipment for OEMs are additional key attributes.
