California group backs audit of parks department

The Recreational Boaters of California is supporting the decision of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to accept a bipartisan request to conduct a comprehensive audit of the finances of the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

This action, initiated by assembly members Beth Gaines and Paul Fong, and state Sen. Noreen Evans, follows numerous reports that California State Parks management staff took advantage of a costly vacation buyout and that California State Parks had $54 million in surplus money hidden for more than a decade, according to the RBOC.

“This audit will investigate how the funds were generated, where they have been hidden, how they have accumulated and how the state can take corrective action to rectify this situation and prevent similar actions in the future,” RBOC president Cleve Hardaker said in the statement. “The allegations of financial mismanagement at State Parks are of great concern. California’s boaters provide significant funding to State Parks through park entrance fees, as well as fuel tax dollars totaling close to $30 million per year.”
