Sea Tow adds Midwest radio-check stations

Sea Tow Services International added Automated Radio Check host stations in Michigan and Illinois.

The Inland Seas Educational Association of Michigan is now a host station. Boaters in Grand Traverse Bay and the Manitou Passage can take advantage of the boating safety service free by calling channel 28 on their VHF radio.

Crowley’s Yacht Yard is also a Sea Tow ARC host station. Boaters in the Chicago Harbors area can take advantage of the service free by calling channel 27 on their VHF radio.

Sea Tow’s ARC service, provided in association with MariTel, lets boaters check that their vessel’s VHF radio is in working order. To use the service, they tune the VHF to the local Automated Radio Check channel, key the mic and request a radio check. They will hear an automated response and their call will be played back to them, confirming that the radio is operational and allowing them to assess transmission strength, a crucial safety check.

Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service also aids the Coast Guard by reducing non-emergency communications on VHF channel 16, freeing the channel for distress-call activity.
