Landing School keeps January start date

The Landing School said it will continue to offer a January start for its wooden-boat building programs.

Starting Jan. 28, 2013, the second start will offer students an opportunity to begin their studies seven months earlier than with a typical September offering, allowing them to graduate and begin a career sooner.

"With this second start we are proactively offering more options for both our students and the marine industry as a whole by educating qualified graduates more frequently throughout the year," Landing School president Bob DeColfmacker said in a statement.

The Arundel, Maine-based school is a full-time, accredited post-secondary school that blends education in modern yacht design, boatbuilding and marine systems technology under one roof.

Students in the program are taught construction methods through formal lectures, field trips and hands-on projects. They are divided into teams to build several small boats under the supervision of an instructor. The teams are responsible for all aspects of construction, from lofting to sea trials.

"The second start is a win-win situation for students and the marine industry, which has a high demand for skilled employees,” Landing School director of education Ken Rusinek said in a statement.
