Industry official named to Homeland Security committee

Retired Maj. John C. Fetterman, director of law enforcement for the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, was appointed by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to the National Maritime Security Advisory Committee for a three-year term.

Composed of 22 members representing all segments of the maritime industry, the committee advises the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security via the commandant of the Coast Guard on matters such as national security strategy and policy, actions required to meet current and future security threats, international cooperation on security issues and security concerns of the maritime transportation industry, according to a statement.

The committee addresses such issues as the transportation worker identification credential, port security grants, security regulations and facility security planning and threat assessment policies.

The committee also works with representatives of the Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Transportation Security Administration, as well as other federal agencies.

“I'm honored to be appointed,” Fetterman said in a statement. “I hope to represent NASBLA and be an advocate for maritime law enforcement and emergency responders.”

Fetterman was hired in January 2010 as NASBLA’s first law enforcement director. In this capacity he works to integrate and coordinate law enforcement programs within NASBLA and to improve the nonprofit organization’s value to its members through education and consulting services. 

Before joining the NASBLA staff, Fetterman worked for the Maine Bureau of Marine Patrol for 32 years, beginning his law enforcement career in 1977 as a field officer.
