Beached motoryacht draws crowd in Florida

Beachcombers along Vilano Beach, Fla., were surprised Sunday morning to find a 64-foot Hatteras motoryacht intact and perched in the white sand.

The scene drew a crowd of beachgoers, prompting local authorities to ask spectators to stay clear of the vessel while a plan is hatched to deal with the beached boat.

The skipper of Rays the Bar, registered out of Newport, R.I., says he and his daughter were traveling from Boston to Fort Lauderdale when the vessel hit bottom near St. Augustine Inlet during heavy seas and fog Saturday night.

I have personally used this captain and her mate over a dozen times to move boats of similar size and value. She has captained boats from FL to MA, from the Great Lakes to MA, and everything in between. She has been in all sorts of situations from weather to mechanical issues, and there has never been a single problem she couldn't solve. I have all the faith in the world in her skills, ability and care.

Shite happens. Glad they're ok. And yes if you've never had a mishap then you're spending too much time sitting at the dock "land yachting" and not enough time actually yachting which involves sometimes navigating in treacherous conditions.

Easy guys, there's no one out there on the water who hasn't made a mistake. Short handed in heavy seas, fog and close to land - the worst of conditions.
