Boater fees increase in California

Californians face higher sales taxes and increased boater registration fees that took effect with the new year.

The passage of Proposition 30 in November raises California’s sales tax by a quarter-cent. The higher rate will remain in effect through Dec. 31, 2016, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

The measure, expected to generate about $6 billion annually for California public schools during the next four years, also increased the income tax on a sliding scale for residents earning more than $250,000 annually. The higher tax rates expire in 2018.

The tax gets added to taxes that local jurisdictions already impose.

The hike in boat registration fees is to fund the implementation and administration of a quagga and zebra mussel monitoring, inspection and eradication program, according to the bill titled AB 2443.

The bill will affect every vessel subject to registration fees in California. The added fee will be determined by the state Department of Boating and Waterways and is not to exceed $10.
