The Lauderdale Marine Center has started hauling boats with a new extra-large travel lift nicknamed “The Beast.”
It was built by the Italian manufacturer Cimolai, and it stands more than five stories tall and 47 feet wide. It’s painted bright green and is reportedly one of three lifts in the South Florida area with a capacity of more than 400 tons.
The Beast has a maximum capacity of 485 tons and is capable of hoisting boats up to 180 feet with a maximum beam of as much as 34.5 feet. The first boat that the new machine picked up was the 143-foot Van Mill motoryacht Star Ship.
“Increasing LMC’s haulout capabilities enables us to maintain our position at the top of the list of yacht repair facilities in South Florida and to accommodate the ever-growing worldwide fleet of large yachts that come annually to this area for service,” Doug West, president of LMC, said in a statement. “For jobs of all sizes and budgets, our unique business model gives owners and captains total control and peace of mind from the time they arrive at the yard.”
Other recent enhancements to the marine center include improvements to the west portion of the upland property, which expanded the boatyard’s capacity to accommodate 14 additional yachts as large as 120 feet with multi-phase, multi-voltage power capabilities of as much as 480 volts.
