The Newport International Boat Show is expanding educational opportunities for attendees. The show is slated for Sept. 14-17 at Newport Yachting Center in downtown Newport, R.I.

“Every year, more and more people become boaters, and they need guidance on best safety practices and hands-on information to gain more confidence and skills,” Jocelyn Emory, marketing director for Newport Exhibition Group, said in a statement. “Through these extensive educational programs, we at the show are hoping to provide that community an opportunity to learn and tap into resources for new boating enthusiasts and for boaters looking to sharpen their skills.”

Take the Helm: Your Passport to Confident Cruising is a new series this year, being held over three days. Topics include safety at sea, switching from sail to power, dogs and boats, living aboard, offshore cruising essentials and more.

Technical training will be offered Saturday at IYRS School of Technology and Trades, led by American Boat & Yacht Council expert Ed Sherman.

Also new is How to Become a Multihull Owner and Cruiser, led by three multihull experts on Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Freedom Boat Club will hold 90-minute in-water training sessions aimed at powerboaters. For sailors, the Narragansett Sailing School will offer on-water sailing classes for beginners, intermediates and women only.
