Outboard fiberglass boats were the industry’s top seller in the early-reporting states.

Marking another milestone in its recovery, the U.S. recreational boat industry sold more than 250,000 boats in 2016 for the first time in eight years.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association said new sailboat retail sales totaled 6,500 units in 2016.

The recreational boat industry followed a strong January with moderate February growth.

Statistical Surveys said 246,891 boats were sold industrywide in those states in 2016, 4.9 percent more than in 2015.

The gains were concentrated among fiberglass outboard boats and aluminum fishing and pontoon boats.

Lifted by Florida and Texas, the nation’s top two states for sales, the recreational boating industry achieved moderate growth in November that raised the year’s percentage sales gains to levels more in line with forecasts.

Will the upsurge in consumer confidence and spending carry over into the new year?

Recreational boat sales posted their second consecutive month of weak growth in October, leaving the industry farther from the full-year gains forecasters were hoping for when 2016 began.

The industry recorded the highest sales for that quarter since 2008, just before the Great Recession.
