PHOTO COURTESY CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF WATERWAYS California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways recently announced the availability of grant funding to prevent the spread of quagga and zebra mussels in the state.
Funded by the California Mussel Fee Sticker, the Quagga and Zebra Mussel Infestation Prevention Grant Program expects to award up to $2 million to eligible applicants. Applications will be accepted from Apr. 1 to May 10.
In a statement, the division said the grants are available to entities that own or manage any aspect of water in a reservoir that is open for public recreation, is mussel-free and does not have an existing two-year grant awarded in 2023. Funding is intended to augment local resources and the funds must be used for prevention programs such as planning, watercraft inspection stations and inspectors, launch monitors, watercraft decontamination units, education and outreach.
The DBW will host a webinar on Apr. 4 to educate potential applicants. Applications will be reviewed by the DBW in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Applicants will be notified of approval by August and grants will be disbursed the following month.
