Candela, the Swedish builder of electric hydrofoil boats, is opening a “test drive” center in California, its first in the United States.

The demonstration center in Sausalito is slated to open April 1, Candela said in a statement, and will offer test rides of the hydrofoiling boats.

The long-range electric foiling boats use 80 percent less energy than conventional powerboats, “flying silently” for more than two hours at 22 knots because of the reduced wetted surface, according to Candela.

“Thanks to our hydrofoil technology and our direct-drive C-POD motor, there’s no slamming, no noise, no fumes and very little maintenance,” Tanguy de Lamotte, CEO of Candela U.S., said in a statement. “It basically takes away all the bad things with powerboats.”

The Candela C-7 in 2019 became the company’s first recreational model, with the C-8 day cruiser now in mass production.
