Today is National Dog Day, a celebration of our canine companions (and not necessarily related to the dog days of August or Sirius the Dog Star rising and setting with the sun).

In observance of the day, Sea Tow shared with Trade Only Today the story of a 12-year-old yellow Lab named Tuna, best friend to Capt. Ryan Saporito, manager of operations at Sea Tow Wrightsville Beach and Crystal Cove, N.C.

Since 2014, Tuna has been at Capt. Saporito’s side — you’ll spot them in the morning on North Carolina’s Masonboro Island as they await calls for on-the-water assistance; or in the Sea Tow office keeping the captains alert for calls from boaters on the waters off Wilmington, in the Tarheel State’s Cape Fear region.

“Tuna has been my best friend and loyal sidekick since he was very young,” Capt. Saporito said. “Early on, he would help me stand watch when I had duty at Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral, and since I began working for Sea Tow in 2014, Tuna has been at my hip.”

Tuna is a familiar lookout in the area. “Our Sea Tow customers as well as other boaters on the water know Tuna better than they know me, so he’s really a friend to everyone here around Wrightsville Beach,” said Saporito

Let your dog, or any nearby canine, know you appreciate their loyalty and companionship on National Dog Day.
