Sonar manufacturer FarSounder yesterday announced a partnership with The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 project to advance the collective understanding of the ocean floor while pursuing a complete map of the Earth’s seabed.

Seabed 2030 is a collaboration between The Nippon Foundation and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans, which aims for the complete mapping of our oceans by 2030, and to compile all the data into the freely available GEBCO Ocean Map.

Seabed 2030 will allow for data sharing among FarSounder customers through the International Hydrographic Organization’s Data Centre for Digital Bathymetry. The system archives more than 30 terabytes of oceanic depth soundings and serves as the long-term storage solution for Seabed 2030 data.

“By streamlining the transfer of data from [our] customers to the DCDB, we hope to encourage broader participation, inviting more individuals to actively contribute to bridging the gaps in our understanding of the ocean,” FarSounder CEO Matthew Zimmerman said in a statement.

GEBCO is a joint program of the IHO and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, and is the only organization with a mandate to map the entire ocean floor, according to GEBCO.
