Ben Torre, a student at Lanier Technical College in Gainesville, Georgia, won the SkillsUSA national gold medal in marine service technology.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit education association serving middle-school, high-school and college/postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.
The award marks the first time a student from Lanier Tech has competed in the state or national SkillsUSA marine service technology competition, as the program is new to the school. The school has partnerships and sponsorships with Yamaha and Mercury.
The competition was held at each competitor’s college, due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“Although the competitions were completely different this year, I greatly appreciate everyone who made this opportunity possible for me. It makes me proud to represent my college on a national stage,” Torre said in a statement.
SkillsUSA’s administration also named Lanier Tech’s Hall Campus as the official site for the 2022 SkillsUSA marine service technology state competitions.
