MAN Energy Solutions’ 49/60DF engine has received Type Approval classification after a five-day test at company headquarters in Augsburg, Germany. The test was witnessed by inspectors representing the American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, Carbon Capture and Storage, Det Vorske Veritas and RINA.

Though the engine is for heavy commercial use, it’s another example of a marine company that’s working to reduce its carbon footprint.

“As we enter a new era of decarbonization, the 49/60DF is an obvious choice for vessel owners with ambitious, emission-reduction targets that prize full fuel-flexibility and multiple options for clear emissions paths,” Marita Krems, head of 4-stroke marine and license, said in a statement.

The dual-fuel 49/60DF can run on liquefied natural gas, diesel and heavy fuel oil, as well as biofuel blends and synthetic natural gas. In the statement, MAN said the engine sets benchmarks in fuel efficiencies in gas and diesel mode and minimizes fuel costs and CO2 emissions.

Soot emissions are halved in diesel mode, and methane emissions are reduced in gas mode, according to MAN. The engine also is methanol-ready.
