Massachusetts has established an Office of Outdoor Recreation within the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretariat. Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito made the announcement.
The new office will work alongside the state’s Department of Fish and Game, Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Massachusetts Marketing Partnership and the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism.
“From the Berkshires to the Cape and islands, the commonwealth is home to a range of recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors,” Gov. Charlie Baker said in a statement. “The new Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation will help us continue to enhance this growing sector by partnering with engaged and passionate stakeholders.”
Added Polito: “Outdoor recreation is a consistent economic driver for communities throughout the commonwealth, creating jobs and supporting small businesses. … The creation of this office will promote collaboration between local communities, outdoor businesses and the commonwealth on expanding these opportunities even further.”
Massachusetts joins 17 states that have created similar offices. The Bay State office will coordinate outdoor recreation policy, identify funding opportunities for programs and infrastructure, enhance public access, support the outdoor recreation economy, and advance equity and access to outdoor recreation opportunities.
