The Marine Industries Association of South Florida announced the success of the annual Broward County Waterway Cleanup, which took place March 1. More than 1,100 volunteers gathered across 38 sites throughout the county to clean up waterways, parks and communities.

In total, more than 20 tons of trash was removed, including a car engine, an exhaust system and a mannequin arm. The event was organized by MIASF and presented by the Florida Inland Navigational District and Informa Markets.

“This event showcases the power of our community and the marine industry working hand in hand for a cleaner, healthier environment,” MIASF vice president Lori Wheeler said in a statement.

MIASF also hosts scholarship contests that award $1,500 to Broward County middle school and high school students.
