Ocean research non-profit Ocearch named a newly tagged white shark Umi, which means “sea/ocean” in Japanese, to honor its relationship with Yamaha Rightwaters.

Ocearch will monitor the 13-foot, 3-inch female, which weighs 1,225 pounds, with its Global Shark Tracker to learn more about how white sharks contribute to healthier oceans.

“Our goal during this expedition is to meet mature animals off the Southeast United States before they head north for the summer, and we’re happy to include Umi in our studies,” Ocearch founder and expedition leader Chris Fischer said in a statement. “Our research with Umi helps reflect Yamaha Rightwaters’ commitment to environmental stewardship and scientific research.”

Yamaha Rightwaters last year announced a three-year agreement with Ocearch to provide outboards for its chase boats.
