U.S. Rep. Dave Joyce (R-Ohio) has introduced the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Act of 2025 to extend funding for the program through fiscal year 2031. The initiative, set to expire next year, addresses such water quality issues as algae and pollution in the Great Lakes.
Along with the bill’s introduction, Joyce relaunched the Great Lakes Task Force with other representatives to lead efforts to protect the boating, recreation and economic activities the lakes provide to millions of Americans.
“The GLRI is instrumental in funding unmet needs for our region and the millions of people who depend on our Great Lakes as a source of clean and safe drinking water for their livelihood and recreation and leisure activities,” U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), a member of the Great Lakes Task Force, said in a statement.
The GLRI has generated significant economic returns, contributing $3.35 in economic activity for every dollar spent, according to University of Michigan studies. The proposed legislation is supported by more than 20 organizations, including the Alliance for the Great Lakes and the American Sportfishing Association.
