The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced the first round of grants awarded this year through the Boating Facility Grant Program.
Through the program, the commission provides grants for the planning, acquisition, development, expansion and rehabilitation of public boating facilities within the state. Funds are derived primarily from registration fees and fuel taxes. In some cases, federal aid is used.
“Pennsylvania continues to prove itself as a leader in connecting people to the water,” Paul Littman, director of the PFBC’s Bureau of Boating, said in a statement. “Through our Boating Facilities Grant Program, more communities across the commonwealth are realizing the benefits of improving their existing access areas or developing new places that local residents and visiting recreational boaters can enjoy.”
The commission gave consideration to projects that will provide public access in the Delaware River watershed, with the availability of additional funding through the Delaware Watershed Conservation Fund.
Created in 2018, the fund is supported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. It guides and supports federal, state, regional and local partners to identify, prioritize and implement habitat restoration and conservation activities within the watershed.
Additional Boating Facility Grants, which can include more than $100,000 in funding, will be announced later this year.
