Sea Tow is hosting a two-day Hands on the Helm Boating University in Portland, Conn., for boaters ages 10 to 16.
The course — to be held April 9 and 16 — will enable students to obtain the credentials required to apply for Connecticut’s boating certificate.
Students will receive instruction on:
- how to use a VHF radio, including channel etiquette and executing a call for routine help and emergency response
- how to use fire extinguishers and flares
- how to correctly wear a life jacket, including hands-on experience with inflatable models
- how to tie basic knots
Hands on the Helm runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Petzold’s Marine Center. The cost is $149.
