Canadian electric boat and engine manufacturer Vision Marine Technologies is attempting to establish an endurance record for boats that run on electricity. A 23-foot triple-toon powered by twin E-Motion electric outboards and equipped with a solar array is attempting to cover 1,050 miles in 17 days.

“We want to showcase that electric is on the water today,” Bruce Nurse, investor relations at VMT, told Trade Only Today. “It gives us publicity and exposure on providing a solution to the pollution we see with the internal combustion engines that run on gas and diesel.”

Vision Marine said in a statement that the three-person crew — Capt. François Légaré, Sylvie Latendresse, who oversees logistics and navigation, and Vincent Prévost, VMT’s brand and communications director — departed Electrified Marina in Norfolk, Va., July 23 with a final destination of Lighthouse Point, Fla. The longest single leg of the run is 81.6 miles, from Cocoa Village, Fla., to Fort Pierce.

Nurse said the crew will run at around 10 mph.
