A Whale of a Challenge

As a new boating season gets underway, the top threat to boater access and businesses that depend on the marine industry is the federal government’s proposed speed restrictions along much of the Atlantic coast of the United States.

New Research, New Opportunities

As interest in boats and other recreational goods adjusts to a new normal after the pandemic, the mission of Discover Boating — powered by the NMMA and the MRAA — remains focused on attracting the next generation of boaters, and retaining and growing current boaters.

Shorting the Circuit

Electrification of boats is still a few years away, but sustainable, emissions-reducing fuels are available now, and the marine industry needs to do its part to reduce CO2 emissions

The Tech Plateau

While some may be underwhelmed with the slower pace of new-product releases, there is some tech on the horizon that I find quite exciting to help make boating safer, easier and more sustainable.

Building a Bigger Base

The recreational vehicle industry, like the marine industry, saw all-time-high sales during the Covid-19 pandemic, and now leaders in both realms are working on ways to keep those newcomers in the fold.

New-Boat Registrations Continue to Slide

As the gaudy sales figures from the pandemic continue to return to more realistic numbers, the main segments of the recreational boating industry saw new-model registrations of 4,421 in November, a 30.3% drop from 6,340 during the same time in 2021. .

Year Three of Five

Fear of an impending exodus, especially with concerns about a looming economic recession, has leaders at the MRAA, the National Marine Manufacturers Association and the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation urging the industry to start focusing immediately on improving customer service as the primary way to retain these boaters.

Time to Pivot

After a buoyant two years and an unprecedented sales heyday among first-time boat buyers, the recreational marine industry must now prepare to pivot once again amid a shifting economy.
