Cummins Inc. and Danfoss Power Solutions’ Editron division have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on a hybrid marine propulsion system.

“This partnership is another step forward in Cummins’ Destination Zero strategy — our plan to reach net zero emissions across our products by 2050,” Rachel Bridges, global marine director, Cummins Inc., said in a statement. “The respective products of Cummins and Danfoss are an ideal match because both companies are focused on energy optimization, efficiency and clean solutions. By providing a joint solution, we will be able to multiply our impact by bringing products and solutions to the market that are fully optimized for the marine industry.”

The International Maritime Organization wants to reduce the marine industry’s greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from 2008 levels by 2030. New local and regional regulations and certifications are being enacted to encourage conversions to hybrid and electric solutions.

Cummins and Danfoss Editron said they will focus on a new generation of variable-speed diesel gensets, fuel cells and energy storage packages. The new hybrid system could decrease CO2 emissions by up to 100%, the statement said.

Danfoss/Editron specializes in hybrid and electric powertrain systems for the marine, off-highway and on-highway markets. It uses synchronous reluctance assisted permanent magnet technology and the company develops its own software. Danfoss has operations in Finland, Denmark, China, the United States and the United Kingdom.
