The Royal Netherlands Watersport Association unveiled its hydrogen-powered coach’s boat, the H2C Boat, at the World Sailing Championships in the Netherlands. The boat is powered by a Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motor.
Developed by the Dutch company H2 Marine Solutions, the boat is the result of a collaboration among Torqeedo, De Stille Boot and the Delft University of Technology. Torqeedo provided a Deep Blue 50R outboard and Deep Blue 40 lithium-ion battery.
In addition to the battery, the H2C uses a hydrogen fuel cell as a range extender for a minimum operating time of five hours. The 20-foot boat has an estimated top speed of about 28 mph.
“Sailing is all about harnessing the power of nature, wind and waves,” Torqeedo CEO Fabian Bez said in a statement. “Now the highest levels of competitive sailing can achieve the range, run time and performance they need in a coach boat, emission-free.”
The concept for the H2C was part of the Zephyr project, which aims to demonstrate the technical viability of a green hydrogen chain in the marine sector.
