Marine flares are required to be carried aboard recreational boats, but many boaters don’t know the safety devices expire 42 months after manufacture. This Saturday, Maine boaters will have the opportunity to dispose of expired flares at Hamilton Marine in Portland.
The location is 197 Presumpscot St., and the collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Boaters who turn in flares will receive a safety gear discount coupon provided by Hamilton Marine.
In a statement, BoatUS said it’s encouraging its members in Maine to take advantage of this opportunity to get rid of expired flares that are an environmental hazard.
The flare drop-off event is sponsored by Hamilton Marine, Coast Guard Casco Bay Flotilla 2-1, the Maine State Fire Marshall and Friends of Casco Bay.
