Forty-six teams this week are competing in the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, which brings together engineering students and professionals to present alternative marine propulsion systems. Organized by the Yacht Club de Monaco, the event runs July 5-8 and includes students from 31 universities.

“The goal remains to stimulate creativity to design eco-friendly propulsion systems and share the experiences and knowledge acquired,” yacht club general secretary Bernard d’Alessandri said in a statement.

The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Credit Suisse, BMW, SBM Offshore, Oceanco, Ferretti, Sanlorenzo, Lürssen, Monaco Marine and Palumbo SY.

The event included an online networking session in June for marine industry professionals and young engineers. Italian builder Sanlorenzo, through its Bluegame subsidiary, has developed a 10-meter hydrogen-powered foiling boat with a top speed of 50 knots and a range of 180 nautical miles.
