MICHAEL DEEMER - STOCK.ADOBE.COM PHOTO Irish Boat Shop announced that it will hold a Great Lakes Boat Building School Showcase at its Charlevoix, Mich., Oct. 17. The goal is to expose GLBBS students to the types of marine-trade jobs that the shop provides, including carpentry, electrical and technician positions.
“This career path is rewarding and achievable without a four-year degree, which is encouraging to students who seek alternatives to a traditional college experience,” GLBBS president Nikki Storey said in a statement. “By partnering with Irish Boat Shop, we can provide students a chance to learn hands-on skills from a top-rated team of marine professionals while also promoting the training programs offered at Great Lake Boat Building School.”
Students can participate in hands-on activities to learn such skills as compression testing, battery maintenance, splicing techniques and computer diagnostics.
“Irish Boat Shop continues to invest in outside training and certifications for our own team and are always interested in hiring local residents,” company president Shae Cross said in the statement. “People here appreciate Northern Michigan’s boating atmosphere, and we think it is important to help them learn the skills to be a part of our industry.”
In further collaboration between GLBBS and Irish Boat Shop, the Dave Irish Student Sponsorship provides $15,000 toward a student’s tuition in exchange for a one-year work commitment after graduation.
