Keynote speaker Steve Gilliland discussed ways to “enjoy the ride” and nurture passion for work at the International Marina & Boatyard Conference on Thursday.

“If every job paid the same, what would you do, what are you passionate about? asked Gilliland, of Keynote Resources.

He challenged the 400people in attendance at his keynote, sponsored by Safe Harbors Marina, to “do what you love and don’t ever lose your passion because once you lose your passion you will no longer enjoy the ride.”

Organizers said Thursday’s schedule also included a special session with inspirational and aspiring social entrepreneur Maj. Dan Rooney, founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation, a nationally recognized charity that has raised more than $100 million for families of service members who were injured or killed during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Other breakout sessions included topics on dredging projects; working a full-service marina; techniques for generating slip revenue from boat lifts; and understanding marina electrical equipment.

The IMBC continues until 5 p.m. today at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center.

The Association of Marina Industries produces the conference, which is geared to marina and boatyard owners, operators and managers, as well as dockmasters, harbormasters, boatbuilders and repairers and industry consultants.

The IMBC is sponsored by Safe Harbor Marinas; Bellingham Marine; Bot Rop; Cellofoam; Eagle Floats; Golden Giant; ICW Planning Guide; MariCorp US; MYMIC Training Technologies; MYP; Norman Spencer Marine Insurance Services; Scribble Software; SeaLand Insurance; Simply Marinas; and TakeMeFishing.org.
