PHOTO COURTESY RBFF The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation announced a $70 million agreement to implement a National Outreach and Communication Program for a five-year period.
The program is part of a long-term effort established in 1998 to improve communications with anglers, boaters and the public about fishing and boating opportunities, reduce barriers to participation and promote safe practices.
“The RBFF team is energized around a clear mission and vision to spread the joys of fishing and boating to all ages, genders and cultures,” RBFF president and CEO Dave Chanda said in a statement. “We look forward to partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as we continue this important work to support our state, industry and federal partners.”
Sport fishing has experienced growth in recent years thanks in part to the NOCP, with increases in women anglers, urban and multicultural families, and youth. The $14 million per year agreement will allow FWS and RBFF to work with states, tribes and nonprofits to improve fishing and boating access.
RBFF says it will continue its work to grow fishing and boating participation among new audiences. The national Take Me Fishing campaign plans to increase awareness in fishing and boating, and provide newcomers with the resources to help them enjoy time on the water.
