What do a Harvard MBA, a Coast Guard veteran and a scallop fisherman have in common? They’re all harbormasters, and they’re being celebrated today on National Harbormaster Day.

The day of recognition is sponsored by US Harbors, which provides weather, tides, and local boating and fishing information for more than 1,400 harbors in 30 states, including the Great Lakes. Last year, more than 100,000 people participated in Harbormaster Appreciation Day by posting photos, stories and videos of their harbormasters.
US Harbors is hosting a live, online session today at 4 p.m. (ET) with the theme “What it Takes to Become a Harbormaster.” The organization is also offering weekly giveaways on its website and social-media channels.

A Q&A in the August issue of Soundings Trade Only highlights the many facets of a harbormaster’s job.
