The Coast Guard Foundation yesterday announced that it is raising funds to build a Canine Memorial at Coast Guard Base Alameda in California in celebration of K9 Veterans Day, which this year is March 13.
The organization has raised $10,000 of its $50,000 goal, with the support of an anonymous donor.
“These dogs are highly trained and crucial to ensuring our national security,” Coast Guard Foundation president Susan Ludwig said in a statement. “Working dogs deserve our admiration and respect for their vital role in the Coast Guard. We believe that they deserve a place of their own to recognize their contribution to the service.”
The memorial will be built in a way that allows the cremains of service dogs to be laid to rest by their handlers.
