An independent center for testing and developing marine hydrogen propulsion systems has opened in the southwest United Kingdom.

The Hydrogen Boat Centre is a joint project between Pure Energy Professionals and the University of Exeter, according to a report by H2 View, a global publication for hydrogen energy news and information. The facility can offer virtual performance testing against theoretical and real-world approaches. It also allows direct comparisons of fuel consumption and system efficiencies between marine internal combustion engines and hydrogen-based systems with equivalent performance.

The Hydrogen Boat Centre is partially financed by the European Regional Development Fund and is based at the university’s campus in Cornwall, England. Its goal is to provide knowledge for the design, integration, regulation and economics for small commercial vessels and recreational boats powered by hydrogen.
