The IYRS School of Technology & Trades in Newport, R.I., has acquired midrange and portable Yamaha engines, along with a test tank, for its Marine Systems Program. A grant from The Champlin Foundation facilitated the acquisition.

“The engines and equipment we were able to purchase through the grant improve the way we can teach outboards and standardize the education the students receive,” marine systems program manager Spencer Dodds said in a statement. “We’re now able to teach students on new equipment and technology that really feels more like an outboard dealer and less like a hobby shop.”

The Marine Systems Program offers students up to eight certifications, including three Yamaha certifications, and prepares graduates for careers as systems technicians, electricians or engine specialists. In 2024, 90% of graduates secured jobs upon completing of the program.
