The McMurdo Group said it will host the second of its three-part webinar series on search and rescue (“MEOSAR: Are You Ready for the Next-Generation Search and Rescue Satellite System?”) on Thursday.

France-based McMurdo said the webinar will provide an overview of MEOSAR — Medium Earth Orbiting Search and Rescue — and will feature MEOSAR experts Jerry Nardi, chief scientist from Techno-Sciences, and Mickey Fitzmaurice, SARSAT systems engineer from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The webinar will be held at 11 a.m. (EST).

The new MEOSAR is in the testing and development stage and is scheduled to go fully operational in 2018.

McMurdo said MEOSAR is expected to revolutionize the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite-based search-and-rescue system, enhancing a proven system that has helped to save more than 35,000 lives (five lives a day) since 1982. MEOSAR’s technological advancements will enhance distress beacon detection rates, improve location accuracy and reduce emergency response times to potentially save even more lives, McMurdo said.
