Solo ocean rower Lia Ditton had logged nearly three months and 2,700 nautical miles at sea when she reached Oahu’s Waikiki Yacht Club in 86 days, 10 hours, five minutes and 56 seconds, smashing the women’s record of 100 days for rowing solo from San Francisco to Hawaii. A licensed captain and seasoned long-distance rower, Ditton faced unfavorable currents and winds and two capsizes in a journey she called “the greatest psychological challenge of my life,” in a statement. Ditton future plans include targeting a solo exhibition from Japan to San Francisco — 5,500 nautical miles — in spring 2021, hoping to complete a trip where 19 other adventurers’ attempts have come up short.
