The Volvo Ocean Race is now known as The Ocean Race. media page received a message alerting them that the event had changed hands. Atlant Ocean Racing Spain takes over the event, which was co-owned by Volvo Group and Volvo Cars.

“The Volvo Ocean Race has been a great vehicle for building customer relationships, strengthening the Volvo brand and presenting our company and our products to a global audience,” said Volvo Group communication executive vice president Kina Wileke in a statement.

“After 20 years we feel that it is time to hand over responsibility for this prestigious competition to a new and capable owner with the focus, experience and know-how to develop it even further,” said Volvo Cars senior vice president Björn Annwall. “Volvo Cars will continue to support the next edition of the race as a sponsor with special focus on sustainability.”

A statement from Atlant Ocean Racing Spain reads, in part: “Building upon the legacy of the previous race, our innovative program will act as a catalyst for positive change to help restore ocean health by addressing the impacts of plastic pollution. “With a commitment to put sustainability at its heart, the next edition of the race will develop a roadmap to inspire action and create tangible outcomes.”

The next edition of The Ocean Race is scheduled to start in Alicante, Spain, in the autumn of 2021.
