Elaine Lembo was named editor-in-chief of Cruising World, returning to the title where she spent 17 years in staff editorial roles and 11 years as editor-at-large.

Lembo, who most recently was editor-in-chief of Caribbean Compass, where she oversaw the brand’s transition to digital platforms, will lead Cruising World’s editorial direction as part of Firecrown Media’s Sail Group, alongside Sail and Sailing World.

(Soundings Trade Only also is part of Firecrown Media.)

“Elaine has spent her career on the water and on the page, and Cruising World readers already know and trust her work,” Mark MacKenzie, COO of Firecrown’s Marine Group, said in a press release. “Our job is to know cruising sailors better than anyone else. Elaine brings years of firsthand cruising and chartering experience to that job, along with the digital experience she built at Caribbean Compass.”

An award-winning journalist, Lembo began her career as a reporter and editor at small and large newspapers. She has held contributing editorial roles with such marine titles as BoatUS Magazine and 41N, the magazine of Rhode Island Sea Grant. She has freelanced for Soundings, Soundings Trade Only, Yachts International and Explore New England, and has edited and co-authored works by America’s Cup-winning tactician and television commentator Gary Jobson.

A liveaboard sailor, delivery-crew member and boat owner, she splits her time between Newport and Prudence Island, R.I.
