There’s still time to hold a in-store special event using your email and social media lists to draw prospects and customers into the showroom this Saturday for National Fishing & Hunting Day.
This year is the 52nd celebration of fishing and hunting in America. It became an annual event when first proclaimed by President Richard Nixon in 1972. It’s meant to call attention to the lifestyle enjoyed by millions of Americans. Indeed, more than 39.9 million anglers made 463 million trips fishing over 785 million days, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service economists.
The statistics document that an overwhelming number of dealers have a vested interest in fishing. We know that more than 70% of all boats are used for fishing at least some of the time. So whether or not fishing machines are a primary offering in the dealership, fishing shouldn’t be ignored.
Calling attention to a dealership’s fishing customers need not be complicated. Some ideas include:
• special fishing seminars with a local captain or other expert from your state fishing agency
• free-registration prize drawings
• free fishing outfits for all kids
• a National Fishing Day-only discount on your fishing models
• fishing electronics specials
• refreshments (including, of course, Pepperidge Farms Goldfish snack packs)
How about a fishing contest for the biggest, most or any fish caught on Saturday by a customer’s kids (designated ages) with prizes or gift certificates. Perhaps a women’s fishing category, too. Get your staff together today for a quick brainstorm session, then hit your electronic media with the announcements.
It’s notable there are two critical conservation laws you should be aware of: the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act and the Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration Act. The latter expanded the former. Federal excise taxes paid by the manufacturers of fishing tackle and powerboat fuels, as well as firearms, ammunition and archery gear, ensure that reliable and consistent funding exists. Moreover, it requires matching funds from state fish and wildlife agencies to properly manage fish and wildlife resources and ensure public access.
In addition, the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation, a national leader of programs to recruit and retain anglers, and reactivate those who have lapsed, offers dealers a host of videos, photos and promotional materials designed to increase fishing participation. It’s a great source for immediate material you can use to invite and promote your in-store event Saturday.
