Rocking the Boat, an advocacy group that helps children build boats and learn to use them, and former New York Giants player and Super Bowl champion Chris Canty will take part in West Marine’s grand opening of its new store in Woodbridge, N.J., on Sunday.
Rocking the Boat received West Marine’s 2016 BlueFuture grant.
At Rocking the Boat in the Bronx, N.Y., young people work together to build wooden boats, learn to row and sail and restore local urban waterways, operating with the motto: “Kids don’t just built boats; boats build kids.”
Founder and executive director Adam Green said the non-profit organization welcomes roughly 5,000 children through its doors each year. About 200 are regular participants in intensive and high-impact programs.
Green will be at the grand opening, as will several of his young program participants — along with a wooden boat they built together.
“Rocking the Boat will have a display inside the store so guests can learn more about what they do,” West Marine communications director Lindsey Johnson said in a statement.
“The boat will be on display outside the store, and we can’t wait to see what these young people have created. We’re very proud that we could support this worthy organization through our BlueFuture grants program.”
Also on hand will be Canty, co-host of “Hahn, Humpty & Canty” on ESPN New York 98.7 FM and a Super Bowl XLVI champion who spent 11 years playing for the Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys.
Canty is the founder of The Chris Canty Foundation, which is based in Charlotte, N.C. Since 2009 it has used sports as a platform to effect positive change in children’s lives through mentoring and educational programs.
Canty will spend about 90 minutes visiting with guests and signing autographs during the event.
“Chris Canty’s work through The Chris Canty Foundation is truly inspirational,” Johnson said. “Like BlueFuture, the foundation is committed to making lasting change in the lives of America’s children. We’re honored to welcome him to our grand opening event.”
