Mercury Marine yesterday revealed its Avator electric outboard at the Miami International Boat Show. The prototype marks the company’s progression toward electric propulsion.

“We are excited to formally announce this bold new phase of our vision for the future,” Mercury Marine president Chris Drees said in a statement. “Electrification is strategically important to us, and this concept provides a first look at how we intend to deliver on our commitment to being the industry leader in both internal combustion products and electric propulsion.”

Engineering details about the Avator are limited, but the outboard has a removable, fast-charging battery pack; is portable, with a quick-disconnect transom fitting; and has a 12.4-inch diameter, 9-inch pitch propeller.

Mercury said it plans to release its first electric products to the market late this year or in early 2023.
