The Marine Industries Association of South Florida on March 2 partnered with the Florida Inland Navigational District and Informa Markets to organize the annual Broward County Waterway Cleanup. The event began in the 1970s..

“Although our commitment to environmental stewardship is unwavering every day, there’s a special energy in uniting the community for a collective effort each year,” MIASF vice president Lori Wheeler said in a statement. “The success of this event is a testament to the dedication of our enthusiastic volunteers. Witnessing the community gather year after year for a cause greater than ourselves is truly inspiring.”

More than 1,100 volunteers gathered across 38 sites throughout Broward County to donate their time cleaning up waterways, parks and communities. More than 320 worked from boats or personal watercraft. MIASF anticipates beating last year’s 17 tons of trash removed.

In addition to the Waterway Cleanup, MIASF hosted recycled art, short story and essay contests that award more than $1,725 in scholarships to Broward County middle- and high-school students. This year’s recipients include:

• Poster Contest: Lillian Zheng

• Short-Story Contest: Edan Pierre
