Viking Yachts announced a demonstration of the performance of renewable marine diesel with a 48 Convertible during a media event June 3 at Farley State Marina in Atlantic City, N.J. It coincides with Viking’s annual dealer meeting and sea trial event.

“This is an exciting advancement that supports ongoing efforts to make recreational boating more sustainable,” president and CEO Pat Healey said in a statement. “We’re proud to show that high-performance sportfishing yachts can operate on sustainable fuel today, with no compromise in performance.”

The 48-foot Convertible’s twin 1,150-hp DI16 Scania V8s will run on RD99, a drop-in renewable diesel derived from plant oils and waste fats. The fuel meets ASTM D975 standards and can be used in conventional diesel engines without modification, offering up to 75% reductions in life cycle carbon dioxide emissions, the statement said.

Following the sea trial, if time permits, media can tour Viking’s 880,000-square-foot New Gretna production facility, where models from the 38 Billfish to the flagship 90 Sky Bridge are built.
